After being available on mobile devices for over a year, Bethesda has finally released a version of Fallout Shelter that can be played on Windows PCs. Unfortunately, it requires the Bethesda.net launcher (and therefore account) in order to download. Once you have it downloaded, you can create a stand alone shortcut and bypass the launcher, but unless you continue using the launcher, you will be unable to access the in game store.
Fallout Shelter is a base building simulation that takes place in the Fallout universe. The PC port doesn’t even attempt to hide its mobile origins, and as a free download, I think that’s just fine. You build resource producing rooms, assign dwellers to work in them. You have to manage your resources while trying to grow your base – leading to more buildable rooms. Different dwellers have different skills, making them optimal to place in certain rooms, and while it’s not patently clear early on, it doesn’t take too long to get it all figured out.
There are quite a few different types of items available in the cash shop – most of them having to do with automation and speeding up processes. How playable the game is without laying out some cash for convenience remains to be seen. However, if you missed out on the mobile hype, you now have the chance to check out Fallout Shelter from the convenience of your desktop or laptop.
