I know, this is one is somewhat outside of the box again – rather than being a single game, it’s a haven for gamers who want to play something really really old school. 2600 Online offers 81 different classic Atari 2600 games available to play free in your browser.
If you’re too young to remember the Atari 2600, chances are there won’t be much here for you. However, for those of us who cut our gaming teeth on this console, it’s a huge old batch of nostalgia.
Surprisingly, the games play fairly decently with keyboard only controls (although there is a lack of explanation of what buttons do what – if all else fails, WASD your way through it and make liberal use of the space bar). Although several of my personal favorites are absent – no Megamania or Pitfall Harry, there’s a fairly broad selection of games.
I tried out three classics (Space Invaders, Frogger, and Q-Bert) as well as a game I had no recollection of (Tapper). The games I’d played before looked, played, and even sounded exactly how I remembered them. I love the fact that they give you a close up of the cartridge on your screen as well.
2600 Online has managed to put together a fairly impressive collection of faithfully rendered games from the early 80s. Clearly, for someone, this was a labor of love.
